The problem:

27.9% have dementia age 66 compared to 1.3% non-schizophrenic
70.2% have dementia age 80 compared to 11.3% non-schizophrenic
two-thirds of Alzheimer’s patients are women

Solutions:

Low dose lithium halves progression
Mushrooms help
avoid anticholinergic
try to reduce antidopaminergic drugs
Transfat increases risk of Alzheimer's (74% increase)
Low B vitamins implicated in schizophrenia, depression
Vitamins B6, B9 (folate) and B12 may help prevent cognitive decline and protect against more serious dementia such as Alzheimer’s disease (supplementing B vitamins reduced brain shrinkage by 700% in certain areas of the brain in one study, in another study, taking B6, B9, B12 led to lower homocysteine and reduced brain shrinkage by up to 90%) (mercola)
A primary mechanism of action is the suppression of homocysteine, which tends to be elevated when you have brain degeneration. Having a homocysteine level above 14 micromoles per liter is associated with a doubled risk of Alzheimer’s
People with poor dental hygiene are 21 percent more likely to develop Alzheimer’s

-People who took 9,826 steps per day were 50 percent less likely to develop dementia within seven years.
-People who walked more than 40 steps per minute cut their dementia risk by 57 percent while walking only 6,315 steps per day.
-People who walked 3,800 steps per day at any speed cut their risk of dementia within seven years by 25 percent.
-People who walked at the brisk pace of 112 steps per minute for 30 minutes per day reduced their risk of dementia by 62 percent.

study published in August found that completing household chores lowered the risk of dementia by 21 percent. In addition, daily visits with family and friends reduced the risk by 15 percent compared to people who did not engage in these activities.

Another study showed women with the highest fitness level had an 88% reduced risk of dementia compared to average fitness women (and average fitness women had 41% decreased risk of dementia compared to low fitness women).

Women may derive greater benefits from exercise than men? (aerobic exercise: 24% reduction in all cause mortality women, 15% reduction for men (max benefit 75 minutes vigorous exercise a week, can't overdo moderate exercise, walking max benefit at 6 miles (10 to 15% benefit per half mile) (can't overdo again) (tennis, badminton had highest increase to longevity) (see mercola)) (strength training: 19% women, 11% men (max benefit at 60 minutes a week (20 to 40 min, 2 to 3 times a week) (excessive weight training reduces longevity (see mercola)))

Vitamin D supplementation reduces dementia risk by 40%

Mild to moderate red wine consumption lowered dementia risk by 29% (over the age of 75)
(See drive other folder dementia)

Sauna reduced dementia and alzheimers risk in older men (average age at start of study 53.1 years, followed up for 20 years) (men only study). Compared to taking 1 sauna a week, taking 2 - 3 sauna's a week reduced dementia risk by 22% and alzheimers risk by 20%, taking 4 - 7 sauna's a week reduced dementia risk by 66% and alzheimers risk by 65%.

Risk of dementia was significantly higher (61 percent) among people diagnosed with high blood pressure while young (between the ages of 35 and 44 in this study but worse younger than 35).
Older people with worse blood pressure were more likely to get dementia too (13 percent higher risk)

Carotenoids, which give fruits and vegetables their yellow, orange, and red color are linked to lower dementia. beta-cryptoxanthin also.

1.5hrs average sunlight a day is best lower much worse, higher slightly worse, 1 hr winter, 2 hr summer. UK (your body needs less sunlight in winter)

Low carnitine levels linked to dementia, retardation
(see drive carnitine)

High purpose of life versus low purpose of life -- 2.4X difference in getting Alzheimer's

Viral encephalitis can increase Alzheimer's 10X

Smell biomarkers test can sense if you have early pre alzheimers with 97% accuracy, sense of smell goes down. hyposmia

Blood test can detect alzheimer's with 95% accuracy

Hearing aides may help for those who have hearing loss and are at risk of alzheimer's (unavailable effect size)

Nutrient mix helps (slows pregression):

Low iron might have an effect (more women (menstruation (but it effected post menopause women..?) and children effected than men)

Cognitex Elite Pregnenolone by Life Extension seems to provide many cognitive benefits to those suffering from poor thinking from old age. It would likely help dementia symptoms also.

Adult ADHD associated with a 2.77X increased risk to dementia

Pop, fruit juice, and milk consumption linked to dementia: (FS = free sugars)
Free sugars in solid food was not associated with dementia (abstract) (their graph did show a correlation between sugar in solid food and dementia (See second graph (d))
